DONALD GLAUDE

(San Diego, CA)
www.djdonaldglaude.com

www.myspace.com/donaldglaude

Confident. Exuberant. Raw. Innovative. These are just a few of the words industry insiders and fans have used to describe the talent behind one of America’s favorite house DJs, Donald Glaude. Ranked 68 on DJMag.com’s Top 100 DJs List in 2005, Donald skyrocketed to 48 this year and his genius keeps on growing…

Born in Tacoma, Washington, Donald’s love for music began at an early age. Originally a disciplined student of classical music, he was well-versed in the upright bass and violin. Any aspirations Donald had to continue in the classical vein vanished once he heard his first house record. With an ear for blending music already under his belt, and a love for the energy and soul of musical prodigies like George Clinton and Funkadelic, Donald began to amass a collection of house records which he taught himself to mix with a pair of mismatched turntables and a Radio Shack mixer.

Before Donald few DJs had attempted to spin house records. Donald’s fine ear helped him give birth to a new style. After mastering his craft, Donald began DJing in various clubs around Tacoma and Seattle. During that time he made several important connections which would launch his music to the forefront of what was quickly becoming one of the largest underground movements since New Wave in the late-70s. Perhaps the greatest connection Donald made was with another aspiring DJ and friend, DJ Dan.

Together Donald & DJ Dan sparked the rave scene in Seattle and developed large followings. Knowing that Donald possessed an energy and ability to work the crowd that was unparalleled to anyone else on the circuit, Dan convinced San Francisco’s legendary Funky Tekno Tribe to bring down his good friend Donald to play at one of their parties. Donald’s talents quickly made him a permanent fixture on F.T.T.’s roster.

Some DJs seek commercial acceptance. Donald, on the other hand, has always preferred an emotional connection with his audience. For Donald, house music is not simply a mixed bag of sound, but rather an experience that provokes the soul. Apart from his mastery on the decks, Donald is best known for his dynamic showmanship. He enjoys his music as much as his audience does. Embracing their energy, it is not uncommon to find Donald pumping his hands in the air, jumping up and down and shouting back his love to the crowd. It is this powerful signature style which has led fellow DJ and musical producer, Dave Aude, to call Donald the “James Brown of DJs.” Donald also caused some stir in 2005 and 2006 with his residency at ICE Nightclub in Las Vegas.

Donald’s uncompromising style and innovation show no sign of slowing down any time soon. With the credit of 5 full-length CDs and numerous remixes under his belt, Donald has focused much of his time to production work. Producing such dance floor hits as “Get Up” and “Soul Cha Cha”. As such, Donald has launched two record labels in which are causing rumblings in the industry. Eden Recordings, started with fellow DJ Rick V, and Durty Records, a collaboration with good friend Vince Lombardi.

Donald’s 2005 release, “This is Me” (Moist Music), is a 35-track double CD that defines his creativity, sound and vibrant style. Since its release, Donald’s fans have been eager to hear what’s next from their favorite DJ. Fans will be pleased to know that Donald’s hard at work on another double CD, “For the People” (Moist Music), a live recording and original tracks produced by Donald himself. With the completion of this latest project, the world should be prepared to experience all sides of Donald Glaude: DJ. Producer. ARTIST. Continuing to be “The Hardest Working American Dj” Donald has many new projects planned for this upcoming year. He has a tour scheduled with “America’s Most Beloved Dj” Dj Dan and he also has another new CD releasing in 2007. Also expect new releases from both of his labels Eden Recordings and Durty Records. You have seen him use his musical talents from bring his experience in playing bass, percussion, violin and then moving on to the turntable just show us his grasp on music. To mastering the turntable and then on to recently turned Serato user always expect the unexpected when you come see Donald Glaude………

“Music is about life; music is about people. It is my life dream to bring music to the people. If I can make just one person lose themselves in the music, then I feel I’m giving something special back… from something I’ve been given.”

-D:Fuse (April, 2007)

D:Fuse began his musical career in Austin, Texas writing and performing industrial music under the name “Culture Industry” as a drummer and singer before he turned to DJ-ing. In 1998, he teamed up with his good friend Shane Howard to form Expansion. The two pressed their first two tracks themselves and circulated the vinyl at that year’s WMC. Within months the singles “Feel” and “Listen” were being played out by Timo Maas, Sasha, John Digweed, Chris Fortier, Danny Howells, Jerry Bonham, and a host of other leading DJs. “Feel” was also selected by Dave Seaman for his “Buenos Aires” Global Underground compilation and, within months, the D:Fuse name was known in the worldwide dance music scene.

In 1998, D:Fuse was signed to the premier electronic music label Moonshine Records, releasing three mix compilations and selling well over 120,000 CDs and singles on the imprint including his first solo club hit “Body Shock”. In 2001, D:Fuse was plucked out of the Lone Star State for his DJ skills, by Paul Oakenfold. Two consecutive North American ‘Perfecto’ tours comprising over 50 sold-out dates ensued, plus DJ appearances in England, Scotland, Switzerland, Ibiza, Canada and Mexico. This was followed up with a double CD mix compilation for Oakenfold's prestigious “Perfecto Presents…” series (in conjunction with V2 Records in the USA). “People” was released in February 2002 and immediately entered the CMJ Chart at number 9. Perfecto subsequently released “She Rides” by D:Fuse & Joy. This track appeared on numerous Perfecto compilations as well as the huge-selling Gatecrasher mix series, achieving combined sales of over 200,000 units.

D:Fuse released “People_2: Both Sides Of The Picture”, a 2xCD mix for System Recordings, in 2003. This compilation proved to be one of D:Fuse’s most successful works to date, and further established his name as a producer, since this release featured eight new D:Fuse productions. He was featured on the cover of both REMIX and URB magazines, and joined the select list of performers at the legendary Coachella festival that same year.

In 2004, D:Fuse was voted URB magazine’s 2 Winter Music Conference DJ. He also released his debut artist album “Begin” on System Recordings to much positive acclaim. Splitting recording time between England, Los Angeles and Chicago to create a varied musical landscape, “Begin” broke new boundaries. D:Fuse’s signature fusion of electronic programming and organic instrumentation, plus inspired lyric writing and vocals, re-wrote all the rules of the DJ ‘artist album’. This long-awaited debut received 4 star reviews across the board in the industry media, and the single release “Living The Dream” (featuring Jes of Motorcycle) quickly achieved combined compilation sales in excess of 140,000 units.

“Begin” finally provided D:Fuse with the artistic space he needed to carefully experiment with - and skillfully integrate - musical themes that had influenced him, and his unique sound, over the years: from lush downtempo to driving basslines, funky percussion, and memorable melodies. Accordingly, his live shows began attracting more varied audiences since his music was proving to be equally palatable to both house and progressive music aficionados. The accompanying “Begin” tour was a massive success and hit 75 cities throughout North and South America.

In 2005 D:Fuse saw his fan base grow significantly after being voted one of the Top 15 progressive DJs in North America per the influential BPM/djmixed.com poll. D:Fuse soon teamed up with Mike Hiratzka to produce what would become one of the year’s most sought after remixes: “The Days Of Swine And Roses”, originally recorded by My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. This became the biggest selling single release from the popular “My Life Remixed” CD – a compilation of Thrill Kill Kult classic tracks remixed by various artists.

D:Fuse has always been a true innovator on the club scene, fusing live instrumentation with DJing in the form of live percussion for the past six years. In 2005 he unveiled “The D:Fuse Live Experience”, a DJ/live instrumentation hybrid featuring D:Fuse on a full percussion set up, Mike Hiratzka on guitar, bass, keyboards and vocals, plus vocals by MC Flint. The show coincided with the live CD release of “People_3” recorded at clubs in San Francisco, CA and Austin, TX. The show produced amazing reviews in REMIX and M3 magazines and on countless websites. The live show was well received nationwide with capacity events in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, New York City, Kansas City, and a headlining slot at Miami’s 2006 ULTRA Music Fest.

“For me, it’s all about bringing energy to the people,” according to D:Fuse, “and playing percussion is an important part of that. I want the crowd to know that I’m not just there to play records. I’m there with them and feeling all the same energy that they’re experiencing. When I’m in the booth or on stage something switches on inside me, and it all builds from there.”

D:Fuse’s live show concept led to a team-up with The Scumfrog in 2006 to create their much-hailed live project “DJs Are Alive” alongside DJ Skribble, Kristine W and Static Revenger. The project continued to spark the idea that DJ sets can inspire so much more, both audibly and visually.

In 2006 D:Fuse relocated to Los Angeles to launch a new record label (Lost Angeles Recordings), and produce a full length album, with his new production partner Mike Hiratzka. A full year of intense studio sessions has now produced “Skyline Lounge,” D:Fuse and Hiratzka’s most ambitious work to date. The album delves even further into the use of live instrumentation with guitars, bass and percussion. It also includes violins by Govinda of 18th St. Records fame, and features guest vocal performances by Kristy Thirsk (Delirium, The Rose Chronicles) and DJ Rap, plus vocal performances by D:Fuse and Hiratzka themselves. “Skyline Lounge” also serves to showcase two emerging artists, Ceci Castelblanco and MC Flint.

D:Fuse recently unveiled his latest concept “Bring The Drums” to a capacity crowd at San Francisco’s renowned Ruby Skye. The new show spotlights D:Fuse performing on his most expansive drum kit yet, featuring his signature blend of congas and bongos plus tom-toms, snares and cymbals. D:Fuse will be rolling out the tour to select venues later this year.

As an electronic music pioneer and fervent supporter of today’s alternative media outlets, D:Fuse can currently be heard on “The People’s Mix” on XM Satellite Radio: his primetime Saturday night slot is heard by over 300,000 people every week. D:Fuse recently celebrated his 200th show on XM80 The Move. As a tribute to his Austin roots, a monthly show called ‘Lift Room’ can be found on ProtonRadio.com. D:Fuse also airs a weekly Friday night broadcast on KBIG 104.3 FM (Los Angeles) and, to put cream on the cake, has his own channel onDelta Airlines’ in-flight music programming.

TERRY MULLAN

San Diego, California / Chicago, Illinois

www.terrymullan.com

www.myspace.com/terrymullanacidog

Being a fan of music sometimes means nothing else matters. This is true to life for Chicago’s Terry Mullan. His ears were alert at the right time, if house music is your thing. Right smack in the middle of the blossoming house development of Chicago during the mid 80's, at an early age, Terry was already in tune with what was actually happening.

Although his roots began in hip-hop, Terry found himself smack in the middle of the Chicago house explosion. House and Disco were styles of music that were entirely new to Terry, but the match was struck. Faithfully listening and recording the then burgeoning Chicago airwaves, his nights during middle school were filled with the finest in Chicago house. DJ's like Farley “Jackmaster” funk, Fast Eddie, Armando, & Mike "Hitman" Wilson, via 102.7 WBMX. His mix tape collection fast became a fixture within his bedroom, constantly taping the shows, studying them. Some called it simulcasted education.

Soon after the house scene was all grown up, entered the acid house sound. Here Terry really found solace. It was that added flavor he was waiting for, something new, twisted, and forward. Now all the elements were coming together. And with the addition of the Detroit sound, this was it, three different languages, disco, house, and techno. They could all translate the same message together or apart from one another. This is how Terry is like a translator. With his fluent style, these languages reflect his DJ’ing as well as the tracks he's now composing, which is his way of furthering the evolution of dance music.

For the future, Terry is going beyond just knowing his machines. This sound is put to the test on his releases on Robsoul, Definitive, Control, Funk’d, CHC, Aciiieeed and on his own imprint Catalyst Recordings. Through his label he has released projects for the likes of DJ Sneak, Ian Pooley, Tyree Cooper, Halo Varga, Mazi, Dan Curtin, Bryan Zentz, Angel Alanis, & TJR, as well as for himself under the monikers, Acid OG’s, Speakerphreaker, Tone Broke, and as Serotonin Project on Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva’s former imprint Definitive which featured Terry’s track “Sidewinder” on the Chemical Brothers “Brother’s Gonna’ Work It Out” Mix CD. Additionally, Terry gained notoriety for his records under the alias Speakerphreaker which includes the largely successful “Products Of Our Environment” EP on Catalyst which was featured on Pete Tong’s Essential Selection on BBC Radio 1 in the UK & "La Nina/Nickel Bag Da Funk" EP on Smile which was licensed to several top DJ mix compilations. (Terry Mullan & Halo Varga collaboration).

Terry’s DJ’ing, label, and trax have earned him a reputation that extends worldwide. Never one to follow the masses, he borrowed from each genre to create what we all know to be Terry's sound, putting a bad ass twist on an otherwise conservative house scene.

FREAKY FLOW

Toronto, Ontario; Canada
www.djfreakyflow.com
www.myspace.com/freakyflow

One of the most recognized DJs in Toronto, North America's drum'n'bass mecca, Freaky Flow began extending his reach in the late '90s, signing an album deal with Moonshine and touring relentlessly. By the early 2000s, his efforts paid large dividends: he had become one of North America's top drum'n'bass DJs, alongside other luminaries such as Dieselboy and AK1200. Furthermore, Freaky Flow's fame also elevated MC Flipside's status, the DJ's longtime exclusive MC.

Though born in Philadelphia, Freaky Flow moved to Toronto at a young age. There he took an interest in hip-hop, culminating in his decision to begin DJing. It wasn't long before he was cutting and scratching, in addition to mixing records. Then, once drum'n'bass began making its way from England to North America, Freaky Flow changed his style, excited by the possibilities of using his DJing skills -- honed from years of cutting, scratching, and mixing hip-hop -- to spin drum'n'bass. It also helped that Toronto became North America's drum'n'bass mecca, adopting the style as its own just as Detroit had done with techno, Chicago with house, and New York with garage-house.

By the late '90s, Freaky Flow was one of Toronto's most championed drum'n'bass DJs, standing out from the crowd not only because of his already-honed skills but also because of MC Flipside, who never failed to accompany the DJ during his many live performances. In addition to DJing, Freaky Flow also began producing tracks in the mid- to late '90s, working for Placebo Recordings (distributed by Stickman Records). His first nationally distributed mix album, Obscene Underground (1999), took him to the next level. Soon Freaky Flow was no longer confined to the lively Toronto scene; drum'n'bass fans around the world were now able to hear his obvious talents. The remarkable success of Obscene Underground led to a multiple-album deal with Moonshine, one of North America's leading -- if not North America's leading -- dance label. Freaky Flow's partnership with Moonshine opened yet more doors for the Toronto DJ, who was internationally recognized at this point.

HIVE

Los Angeles, California

www.myspace.com/djhive

www.violencerecordings.com

Celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic, its in the unassuming personality of futurist B-boy Hive that drum and bass finds its mightiest bridge between the UK and the US. His tracks have become staples of virtually all of drum and bass legends, from Andy C to Goldie, and make regular appearances on Grooveriders Radio 1 program--on which Hives towering Neo spent weeks at number one on the Five Mighty Rollers. Hives label Violence has registered sales comparable to Ram, Renegade Hardware, and Valve. He released a tremendous remix of Goldies and Rob Playfords The Shadow for Moving Shadow. Metalheadz has invited him to record an e.p. for the label. Hes toured worldwide, completing a month of dates in New Zealand and Australia in the fall of 2002, preceded by a month in the UK and Europe, which included a guest appearance for the Valve Soundsystem. No American has gained such complete entree into the heart of drum and bass.

Hive came of age as a drum and bass producer in the late 90s, but hes long been active in underground music, with roots that extend deep into underground hip hop, embodied in a string of iconoclastic releases and credits that include recording O.D.s Beneath the Surface album, followed soon thereafter by his own first album Working with Sound, released on his own Mandala imprint. The album was largely centered around jazz-inflected instrumental hip hop, but glimmers of drum and bass flickering across the surface anticipated his forthcoming artistic development. It was on the strength of this album that London/FFRR signed him to an album deal. In 1998 he released Devious Methods, a hallucinatory fusion of hip hop and drum and bass. Lauded by critics in Urb, Spin, Raygun, Vice, and DJ Times, the album yielded the single Ultrasonic Sound, which ultimately made its way on to the soundtrack CD for The Matrix, which notched up double platinum sales, surely as much exposure as any drum and bass artist could hope forand beyond.

Yet beyond is where Hive has gone. Concurrent with his album was the establishment of Celestial Recordings. The label was dedicated to exposing underground hip hop and included luminaries Freestyle Fellowship, Awol One, O.D., Fat Jack, and The Shapeshifters alongside Hives own tracks. From Celestial sprung Vortex, a label dedicated purely to uncompromising drum and bass. Vortex included releases by Dillinja, Tech Itch, Pieter K, Juju, UFO!, Sage, and of course Hive, and established itself as one of the premier drum and bass labels in the US, improving not only on the sound of American releases, but on the overall package as well, with first rate design, promotion, and DJ support. His The Raw Uncut project was a rousing statement for the label, its triple-pack vinyl and eight track CD release gathering new fans both in the US and in the UK, represented most dramatically by Moving Shadows licensing of three tunes for Killa Bites 2.

A club night to complement the expanding profile of the label was the next logical step, and Hive and label partner Daddy Kev opened the west coast franchise of New Yorks venerable Konkrete Jungle. Named best dance club in L.A. by Rolling Stone magazine, Konkrete Jungle positioned itself as Los Angeles premier drum and bass weekly until it closed its doors in 2001.

That same year, Hive and Kev dissolved Vortex, and Hive introduced his most recent label, Violence, which has exploded onto the drum and bass scene with ferocious determination. Featuring releases by Klute, Teebee, John Tejada, Gridlok, Keaton, Echo, Juju, and himself, Hive has steered the label into the vanguard of drum and bass.

Since the inception of the label, Hives musical output has grown ever more assertive and daring, personified most clearly by Neo, one of 2003s great anthems. Neo has reached into virtually every corner of drum and bass, from dedicated ravers to disaffected breaks aficionados, binding fans of different stripes together in common cause. Hive has also been spending more time in the studio with collaborators, including Keaton of The Usual Suspects. The two of them were responsible The Plague, another massive anthem of 2003, released on Hardware. 2004 will see the release of their even more broadly appealing follow-up Bring it On, for Violence.

Tough, propulsive, forged out of both the traditional sampled aesthetic and leading sound designs of contemporary drum and bass, the sound of Hive today bears the imprint of an artist searching for new ways to reinterpret the music by his own lights. Neither a retrospective purist, nor a follower of fashion, Hives music, his DJing, and his label strike a steely, inspiring balance, hewing closely to a tight creative vision that has propelled him into the forefront of drum and bass wherever it thrives.

30 Lucky entrants will be entered into our dj competition. Each contestant will have a 20 minute set to showcase their skills. People with similar styles of EDM will be judged together. One winner from each category will be selected to play 3 upcoming Atari Safari/ Abstract Traxx Gigs. Regardless of how good or bad your set goes, you will still be allowed to enter the event for free. Due to limited space/time we must stick to a few rules.

1. We will only have a competition for a style of music if there are enough entries to make it interesting. For example, if you enter as a psy trance dj, and there are only 1 or 2 more applicants, we will not have a psy trance competition.

2. Application may be rejected if you're already an established DJ. If this is just one of many gigs for you in the month, this competition is probably not right for you.

3. You are actually allotted a 18 Minute DJ slot. If when the 18 minute mark hits, you are in the middle of the mix, you may continue, however you must have your needle and record off of one table, and your headphones out of the headphone jack before your 20 minutes is up, otherwise you are disqualified! It is not fair to other DJs in the competition if someone is allotted more time.

4. All entries must be prepared to play a slot as early as 8pm. your slot within the competition will be random, however the style of music with the most competition will be the latest slots in the evening.

5. You must indicate if you'd like to use cdjs, and no Serato or similar programs will be allowed. We will try to accomodate Serato users if possible, however we cannot have someone unplugging turntables to hook up a serato box in the middle of the competition.

6. ALL CONTESTANTS ARE REQUIRED TO BRING THEIR OWN NEEDLES (If Applicable) AND HEADPHONES. Although this is thought to be common knowledge like bringing your own records and CD's, because of past confusion this must be stated again in the rules.
